Star designer Rousteing quits fashion group Balmain

Star designer Olivier Rousteing announced Wednesday that he is stepping down as artistic director of Balmain, ending a 14-year tenure during which he transformed the French luxury house and became one of fashion’s most influential creative figures. Rousteing, who became the first Black designer to lead a major Parisian fashion label, is credited with bringing a new, youthful energy to Balmain and broadening its global appeal.

Rousteing joined Balmain in 2009 at only 24 years old, describing himself then as “wide-eyed and determined.” Two years later he was promoted to creative director. In a message shared on Instagram, the designer, now 40, reflected on his journey and said he was leaving with optimism. “I am leaving Balmain with my eyes still wide open — open to the future and to the beautiful adventures to come,” he wrote, without giving details about his next move. He thanked his colleagues and supporters who had believed in him from the beginning.

Executives at Balmain and its owner, the Qatari investment fund Mayhoola, praised Rousteing’s impact. Mayhoola CEO Rachid Mohamed Rachid said Rousteing’s leadership “redefined the boundaries of fashion” and inspired a new generation, while Balmain’s managing director Matteo Sgarbossa said the designer’s passion would leave “an indelible mark” on the brand’s history.

Rousteing is widely credited with turning Balmain into a globally desired label, embraced by celebrities, athletes, and the international jet-set. He cultivated close ties with popular culture figures, most notably Kim Kardashian, whom he helped turn into a fashion icon. His runway shows featured hip-hop music and celebrated diversity at a time when mainstream fashion was slower to embrace it. He also collaborated with mass-market brand H&M, a bold move that introduced Balmain to younger and more diverse audiences.

His aesthetic was defined by bold glamour, strong silhouettes, and intricate embellishment, which he said expressed confidence and empowerment for women. He also challenged traditional menswear norms, incorporating sequins, plunging cuts, and softer shapes that reshaped masculine style on the runway.

Rousteing’s personal story and openness further enhanced his public profile. Adopted at birth and raised in Bordeaux, he later sought his biological origins, a journey chronicled in a Netflix documentary. In 2021, he revealed surviving severe burns from a fireplace explosion, a struggle he kept private due to pressure for perfection in fashion.

Balmain said it will announce a new artistic leadership team soon.
