Mac Miller's posthumous album 'Balloonerism' to feature an accompanying short film

Mac Miller's upcoming album, 'Balloonerism', will be accompanied by a short film of the same name. This second posthumous record is set to release on January 17, following 2020's 'Circles'.

The album features SZA on the track 'DJ’s Chord Organ' and includes a rare appearance from Miller’s alter-ego, Delusional Thomas, on the song 'Transformations'. The album has already been previewed with the single '5 Dollar Pony Rides'.

An animated short film directed by Samuel Jerome Mason will be screened in the US for "one night only" on January 15, with international showings following on January 16.

Fans can catch the film in cinemas located in London, Dublin, Paris, New York, and Miller’s hometown of Pittsburgh, along with additional screenings in Auckland, Melbourne, Sydney, and Toronto.

The official synopsis for 'Balloonerism' describes it as following "a group of school friends who are transfigured by the music of a chord organ and launched into a shadow world." It adds that they are "swallowed by the turtle of time" and must navigate the complexities of adulthood.

Tickets for the film are priced at $5, a nod to Miller’s single '5 Dollar Pony Rides'.

The London screening will take place at Aures under Waterloo Station.

The 'Balloonerism' album dates back to 2013. Upon announcing its 2025 release, Miller’s estate stated, "It is a project that was of great importance to Malcolm—he commissioned artwork for it and regularly discussed its release."

They emphasized that this album showcases his musical breadth and artistic fearlessness.

Given that unofficial versions have circulated online for years, the estate felt it was fitting to present an official version to the world.
